Students of the 2nd Cohort of the Master of Arts in Crisis Response and Disaster Management Programme were officially inducted at our headquarters in Karen.

The 2nd cohort has 38 students and brings together a a diverse body of scholars from defence, security, civilians and government.
Brigadier Sitienei welcomed the students citing the significance of the course to the regional landscape which is characterized by disasters and crises of varying magnitudes whose occurrence and ramifications to national and regional development cannot be underestimated.
β€œThis, therefore, means that higher education in a specialized field such as disaster management is a prudent choice that will deepen your analytical abilities as well as critical and creative thinking,” she affirmed.

Armed conflict remains a thorn in the foot of peace and security. Being diverse, we ought to effectively deal with the increasing complexities of conflicts, by furthering our knowledge and reinforcing national capacities regarding different approaches to dealing with armed groups in such regional conflict settings.

Consequently, the 19th Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration Training Group’s (IDDRTG) Extraordinary meeting was hosted at our headquarters in Karen.

The working group, planned for two days hinged on the theme: Addressing regional dynamics of armed conflict – connecting Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) policy, research, and practice. It will be conducted through structured discussions such as the β€˜world café’ format and will be facilitated by world-renowned subject matter experts.
 
Enhancing the dialogue among DDR stakeholders, the participants of the meeting, together with facilitating a networked approach to explore joint ways of working together frequently are some of the objectives to be met. The participants are academic researchers in DDR-related contexts, DDR trainers and planners in training institutions as well as regional, national, and international DDR policymakers.

Officially opening the meeting was the Executive Secretary Regional Centre of Small Arms (RESCA), Lt General Badreldin Alamin Abdegadir. In his opening remarks, the Lt General placed emphasis on the need to ensure sturdy efforts are directed toward DDR interventions. He cited that the interventions should not only be well designed but also effectively delivered and properly coordinated, with wider stabilization, recovery, and development frameworks.

The 19th Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Training Group (IDDRTG) Annual General Meeting kicked off today at IPSTC HQ in Karen.
IDDRTG AGM 2023 1
The Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Training Group (IDDRTG) is a community of a total of 20 international organizations whose aim is to provide an integrated approach to DDR with a focus on planning, management and implementation of the process.
Gracing the opening was Brigadier Joyce Sitienei. She emphasized the importance of DDR. β€œWhat I like about today’s integrated DDR processes is how it forces all of us – that is, international agencies, regional organizations, governments, training institutions and other practitioners to adopt community-centred approaches in DDR programme design and implementation,” she affirmed.
