Armed conflict remains a thorn in the foot of peace and security. Being diverse, we ought to effectively deal with the increasing complexities of conflicts, by furthering our knowledge and reinforcing national capacities regarding different approaches to dealing with armed groups in such regional conflict settings.
Consequently, the 19th Integrated Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration Training Groupβs (IDDRTG) Extraordinary meeting was hosted at our headquarters in Karen.
The working group, planned for two days hinged on the theme: Addressing regional dynamics of armed conflict β connecting Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) policy, research, and practice. It will be conducted through structured discussions such as the βworld cafΓ©β format and will be facilitated by world-renowned subject matter experts.
Enhancing the dialogue among DDR stakeholders, the participants of the meeting, together with facilitating a networked approach to explore joint ways of working together frequently are some of the objectives to be met. The participants are academic researchers in DDR-related contexts, DDR trainers and planners in training institutions as well as regional, national, and international DDR policymakers.
Officially opening the meeting was the Executive Secretary Regional Centre of Small Arms (RESCA), Lt General Badreldin Alamin Abdegadir. In his opening remarks, the Lt General placed emphasis on the need to ensure sturdy efforts are directed toward DDR interventions. He cited that the interventions should not only be well designed but also effectively delivered and properly coordinated, with wider stabilization, recovery, and development frameworks.
