20 participants drawn from military, police, and civilian backgrounds, began a two-week course on Conflict Related Sexual Violence (CSRV) at our Peace and Conflict Studies School in Karen. The participants comprise personnel selected for deployment or are already undertaking peace support operations at strategic, operational, and tactical levels.
Facilitating the course is a team of seasoned experts on the subject matter, and will ensure that the participants are well versed in understanding the concepts around CRSV and eventually, address it through effective planning during prevention and response.
The course was officially opened by Japan's Defence Attache to Kenya, Commander Kawashima Keiko, who was representing her government, the sponsors of the course.
In her opening remarks, she cited, "In the prevention of conflict related sexual violence, especially under peace support operations, it is important to not only educate personnel but also to ensure that managers and commanders understand the standards of conduct and discipline."
Conflict-related sexual violence is a serious violation of human rights. Its disastrous effects cannot be overlooked and our efforts in partnership with the government of Japan, remain firm.
